Arctic Surf Designs is a small, independent company based in Ottawa, Ontario — operating across two disciplines: consumer iOS software and professional retail services.
Our engineering roots run deep. Before apps, our team designed real-time mission-critical software for some of Canada's most demanding environments — railway traffic control at CN Rail and telecommunications infrastructure at Bell Northern Research (BNR/Nortel). That same discipline for reliability, precision, and getting things right shapes every product we ship today.
Real-time software is in the blood. Even writing indie apps — where nothing is technically riding on millisecond precision — the instincts never switch off. Data pipelines get optimised before they need to be. Background tasks stay lean. Edge cases get handled. Old habits from the days of machine code and assembly die hard, and honestly, we wouldn't have it any other way.
We build lean, focused tools. No bloat, no subscriptions, no accounts required.
CN Rail — Traffic Control Systems
Wrote the first-ever train meet/siding multi-train scheduling algorithm — in machine code — optimising single-track meets across the CN network.
Bell Northern Research / Nortel
Authored assembly-language peripheral diagnostics running on every Nortel telephone exchange worldwide — firing every 7 seconds, around the clock. Managed multi-exchange installations across the UK and led software deployments throughout Europe.
